Hungary

There is only one free place for the Olympic qualification groups. The Hungarian team are candidates for this position, but it will be a very hard job. Coach László Skaliczky was missing some of the key players at the qualification matches. With these handballers coming from the German and Spanish championship, they will have a chance to make it. The first steps will be against Spain, Germany and Belarus in the group phase, which will be decisive for them.

The Coach: László Skaliczky

The man behind the national men’s team of Hungary has over 25 years of coaching experience behind him and is a recognised European Master Handball Coach. Skaliczky started his coaching career with the Hungarian youth teams and quickly progressed to coaching the first division where he won his first Hungarian national championship title. With the top Hungarian team Dunaferr, he amassed a few more titles before accepting the position of the head coach of the men’s national team where he has been since 2001. For Euro 2008, Coach Skaliczky had the following to say “I hope that we will have a similar start as in the last World Championship, playing on the same motivation level and can finish at such place that still makes it possible to qualify for the Olympic Games”

László Nagy – Right Back

Nagy signed to FC Barcelona in 2000 after beginning his professional career with Pick Szeged in 1994 at the age of 13 as part of the youth selection before playing his first national league match at the age of 16. Nagy grew up in a family where sport was a key part of everyday life and he spent a total of 7 years with Pick where he sharpened his skills pitting himself against top Hungarian players. With his current team, Nagy has had notable success; however international accomplishments have been limited for the Hungarian national team and for Nagy himself despite over 100 national team appearances.

Gyula Gál – Line Player

The 31-year old pivot of MKB Veszprém is one of the most popular Hungarian national players for many reasons. First of all, he has been playing for the national team since 1999 and he was part of the successful squad that made it to the semi-finals at the Olympic Games of Athens. His usual enthusiasm on court, in addition to his exceptional defensive skills, makes Gál a feared opponent even for the best players. However, Gál is even more dangerous in attack: the pivot can be a leading goal scorer for the team especially at the most difficult games. No wonder: he was 2006 Player of the Year in Hungary.

Nenad Puljezevic – Goalkeeper

The Serbian-born goalkeeper has been playing for the 2006/07 Hungarian champions, Pick Szeged, since 2002. Puljezevic with his 1,95 m height and over 100 kilos weight fills most of the goal, but his great experience helps him even more between the posts. The very popular goalie knows where the shots are going even before the player has taken aim… His debut in the Hungarian national team was at the 2007 World Championship where he was fourth on the goalkeeping efficiency ranking. He was chosen 2007 Player of the Year in Hungary.
