Germany

Heiner Brand’s team will have the greatest confidence before the European Championship. The players showed their enthusiasm and character on home court and have become World Champions. Germany already has all kinds of medals from the European Championships (gold from Slovenia 2004, silver from Sweden 2002 and bronze from Italy 1998). The greatest question is whether such great results can be repeated by Hens, Fritz, Kehrmann and the others.

The Coach: Heiner Brand

Over 24 years ago, Heiner Brand made the transition from World Champion class player to professional coach. In various international competitions he has returned to Germany victorious with 2 gold medals; 4 silver, and a bronze title.

Roggisch made his DHB début in 2002 against Switzerland, since then the 29 year old pivot has shown that he is well on his was to becoming a key player in this particular squad and also he is be a name to watch over the coming years. As one of the tallest players on the team, measuring in at over 2 metres, Roggisch uses this to his advantage on the court. Last year, Oliver had his first taste of international gold when he and his team mates took the 2007 World Championship title. He is currently signed to SG kronau/Östringen.

Johannes Bitter – Goalkeeper

Johannes Bitter made his début for the German national team in 2002; so far he has made over 70 appearances. In this relatively short amount of time he has made quite a name for himself.  His biggest achievement to date is his noteworthy appearance and his contribution at the World Championship in 2007, which earned him and his team the Gold medal on home soil. Bitter began his career in the “Bundesliga” with Wilhelmshavener HV and is currently contracted to Champions League participants HSV Hamburg. Away from the court, Johannes also uses sport as way of relaxing. He is a keen and enthusiastic golfer.

Markus Baur – Middle Back

Baur, having made his first appearance in his national colours over 13 years ago, has won many titles with the German national team. Having won gold medals in both the European and World Handball championships and at the Olympics in 2004 adding a silver medal to his collection, Markus has shown how dedication and devotion pays off! On two occasions he has been named Handball Player of the Year. In 2007, his sporting sojourn took Baur to top Swiss Team Pfadi Winterthur as a player/coach. Baur returned to Germany in January to take up the position of head coach for TBV Lemgo.
