Handball is among the most followed sports in Spain. The Spanish national team has been participating in international competition since 1972 and their first appearance at the summer Olympic Games. However, it was not until 1996 that they started to leave their mark upon the international handball scene.
Always with the intention to achieve the best position in every competition, Spain has had numerous successes in the European and World Championships, though European gold still manages to elude the team despite having major talents such as David Barrufet, the captain of the national team who continues to hold the record for most international appearances. With three Olympic bronze medals, three European silver and World Championship gold, the Spanish national team has returned to European Championship stage with a relatively new line up and a few familiar faces.

Valero Rivera Lopez
”The qualification games for the Euro 2010 were difficult but at the same time it has helped to introduce the new players in the national team, who have become more confident on the playing court. The Euro 2010 in Austria is going to be very important for the Spanish national team and we intend to face the Championship with ambition”
Valero Rivera knows all there is to know about handball. In the season of 1971/1972, he started his career as a player of the first team in FC Barcelona. He stayed at the club for 11 consecutive seasons accumulating six club titles. It was during the season of 1983/1984, playing for ”Blaugrana”, Josep LluÃs Núñez, president of the FC Barcelona at that time, offered him the opportunity to become the coach of the first team until the end of the season. A few months later, he led the team to victory and the first European handball title for FC Barcelona. This was the start of an unstoppable career of success which continued during 21 seasons, until he retired in 2004/2005, changing paths and becoming an agent. In 2008, the new President of the Royal Spanish Handball Federation, Juan de Dios Román Seco offered him the position of national team coach.
