Before the last matches in the Main Round Luka Žvižej is the best Slovenian scorer and second best overall tournament scorer with his 32 goals.
ehf-euro.com talked to the 29 year old left wing player.
Slovenia failed to qualify for the semi-finals in Vienna but surprised many with their performance in the Preliminary Round. With their new coach Zvonimir Serdarušić some kind of fresh wave seems to sweep through Slovenian handball.
Luka Žvižej, who plays for the Hungarian club Pick Szeged, is not too disappointed with the result in EHF Euro 2010.
ehf-euro.com: Your last match against Spain will decide your final place Euro 2010. Are you happy or disappointed with the championship?
Luka Žvižej: Even though we wanted another result the championship was not disappointing for me. But you have to know that experts and the public did not even expect us to qualify for the Main Round. We showed good and bad sides.
ehf-euro.com: What was good and what bad?
Luka Žvižej: After Sweden lead in their match against us, we did not give up, fought and came back. Then we played superb 50 minutes against Germans and Poland. Bad is that we could not keep the pace all 60 minutes. Also, I would rather forget our match against the Czech Republic where we experienced a total collapse in our play.
ehf-euro.com: Being a tough opponent to teams like Poland, Germany or France is not easy”¦
Luka Žvižej: That is why we can be happy. You don't have a lot of opportunities to play against such teams. In every match we learnt something, and now we have to go on. In the next Championship I am sure we will be much better.
ehf-euro.com: Can Slovenia be compared to those teams?
Luka Žvižej: We must be aware that Slovenia does not have so many players as big countries do. Nobody should underestimate our national team. But stay realistic and just think of the countries you named. Our coach is always repeating that we must work as a team and fulfil tasks. This is the only way to defeat Poland, France, Sweden, Germany and others.
ehf-euro.com: Are you happy with your performance at the EHF EURO 2010?
Luka Žvižej: I physically prepared very well and was highly motivated. Not so long ago I also got an important role in the national team and I want to do everything to take advantage of it. I always believe in me and my team.
ehf-euro.com: For the first time you played together with your younger brother Miha, who had a debut in big tournaments. Does that make you proud?
Luka Žvižej: Of course, how not? Playing together with my brother for the first time in a big Championship is a great honour. I am so proud of him. Despite being his first big tournament he had a great performance. In coming years he will be seen a lot on handball courts.
