“This triple is a success that will go down in history,“ French goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer said after becoming EURO champion again.
“We have all three major titles – and I can’t grasp right now what has happened. This is totally mad!”
His coach Claude Onesta was overjoyed with his team after winning the EURO final. “The whole EURO was very difficult for us, the level of the competition was very high," he said.
“We had problems at the beginning, but we improved from match to match. In the final we had the greater physical potential in contrast to Croatia.
“But the Croats are a brilliant young team – and they’re our biggest opponent in every competition,” Onesta said.
The big French party will start after the official EURO banquet in the famous Rathaus in Vienna.
Joel Delplanque, President of the French Handball Federation, said: “We all hoped for this historic victory at the EURO, but it was very tough.”
But what are the French objectives after winning every possible title within 18 months?
“Right after the match our captain Gerome Fernandez said to me, that they now focus on the world title in Sweden from tomorrow onwards,” Delplanque said.
“And in 2012 in London we want to have a men’s and a women’s team on the Olympics podium,” the French President continued.
For the President the key factor for success is the team spirit: “We’re all a great handball family. And this family will have a big party tonight.”
