Format of the Qualification

Also the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia, played on 17th to 29th January 2012, incorporates a qualification system. It will provide an opportunity to all Federations to present their National Teams in a top competition including all the best teams in Europe over a long period.

That guarantees a steady presence in the media and, consequently, offers new ways in the co-operation with partners and sponsors in a qualifying system with a fixed numbers of matches at home and away on playing periods that are known at a very early date.

After the draw of the qualification matches Phase 1 on 31st January 2010 on occasion of the EHF EURO 2010 in Vienna, we would like to provide you with the most important facts as follows:

Total entries:    39 teams (incl. organizer Serbia)
Teams at final tournament in Serbia:    16 teams
Places available at final tournament:    14 teams

Phase 1 of the EHF EURO 2012 Qualification

The Qualification is carried out in two phases. The 12 teams for Phase 1 were seeded based on the EHF National Team Ranking valid for the EHF EURO 2012 Qualification. 

Phase 1 will be played in 3 groups of 4 teams and will basically be played in form of tournaments at one venue from Thursday, 10th June to Sunday 13th June 2010.

The winner of each group will qualify for Phase 2 of the 2012 EHF EURO Qualification.

Phase 2 of the EHF EURO 2012 Qualification

Seven groups of four teams will, this includes 25 teams plus the three group winners from Phase 1, play qualification games with a fixed numbers of matches at home and away.

The Qualification for the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia will be carried out in 7 groups of 4 teams each. The teams will play a total of 6 matches with a home and an away match against each of the other teams in their group. The teams ranked 1st and 2nd of each group will qualify for the EHF EURO 2012 in Serbia.

The playing dates for the qualification matches are as follows:

Round 1:     Wednesday or Thursday, 27/28 October 2010
Round 2:     Saturday or Sunday, 30/31 October 2010
Round 3:     Wednesday or Thursday, 09/10 March 2011
Round 4:     Saturday or Sunday, 12/13 March 2011
Round 5:     Wednesday or Thursday, 08/09 June 2011
Round 6:     Saturday or Sunday, 11/12 June 2011
