The town is a communication centre for the southern part of Eastern Norway. There are two daily ferry connections to and from Denmark, train connections to and from Oslo and further to Gardermoen International airport. It is 25 minutes journey by car to Torp international airport.
Rv 40, the national road, leads one through Numedalen, then on to the mountains or from the mountains down to the coast. The highway, E18, runs behind the town and leads alternatively south to Kristiansand or north to Oslo. For those who come by sea, there are five guest harbours to choose from.
Along the coast lies the little town of Stavern and the small boat harbours of Kjerringvik, Ula, Nevlunghavn and Helgeroa, each with its own special charm. Our green valley - Lågendalen (Lågen Valley) - lies lush and beautiful with its well preserved traditions, salmon fishing and rich animal life.
On a tour of the area you will find attractions that show our roots right back to ancient times, the time of the Counts, iron works, industry and sea faring. In Lågendalen there are old fishing traditions amongst others flåte fishing (from rafts) and teine fishing (baskets)
Fredriksvern in Stavern is one of our best-preserved military bases from 1700s where most of the elements of the original development are preserved. The site is classified as our national fortress and has played a central role in Norwegian Defence sea faring history.
In the harbour in Stavern the Citadel or Stavern Fort as it was originally called is situated. The Fort was established in the 1680s. Our famous sea faring hero Tordenskiold used Stavern as his main base for his expeditions against the Swedish during the Great Nordic War.
Larvik museum´s branch at Verkensgården at Langestrand is situated in Treschow Fritzøe´s historical industrial architecture from the mid 1800s. Herregården and Larvik Maritime Museum can display even more of our rich history. At Hagejordet you find the Kaupang exhibition. What was hidden in the Kaupang Earth, is to be seen. After three years excavation it is proven that Kaupang was Norway´s oldest town, founded around 800 AD.
