For many years in the 1990s and around the turn of the century the female Danish international team was the big favourite of the Danish public and Danish TV viewers - but a new generation of male players entered the stage in 2002 winning the bronze medal at the European Championships in Sweden and indeed winning the hearts of the handball-mad Danish nation. Players like Lars Christiansen, Lars Jorgensen, Kasper Hvidt, Michael Knudsen and Lasse Boesen also won the bronze medals at the European Championships 2004 and 2006 and at the World Championships in Germany 2007 before getting their biggest result so far: Gold medal at the latest European Championships in Norway 2008.
The players in the national squad of today are all ”products” of the famous Danish ”handball school” where talented players are spotted at a young age and carefully brought up through the ranks usually performing very well at international youth level. And new players are constantly on their way such as 22 year old Mikkel Hansen and the new goalkeeping star, Niklas Landin, who has been a member of the Danish youth team which won the World Championship in 2007, the European Championship in 2008 and the silver medals at the World Championship in the summer of 2009.

Ulrik Wilbek
”The players in the team know each other so well that we still have a fair chance of getting yet another good result even though many teams will be fighting hard to get on the podium. Most of all we would love to repeat the gold medal from the latest European Championships - a wish that can only come true if everything really goes our way in Austria”.
Wilbek ranks amongst the most successful international handball coaches of all time. At the helm of the women´s national team, he led them to gold at the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships. Since he took over as coach of the Danish men´s team in 2005 he has won bronze medal at the European Championships 2006, World Championships 2007 and gold at the European Championships 2008. Originally a teacher, Wilbek is considered as one of the biggest innovators in Danish sports; the former politician and TV commentator regularly appears as a guest speaker and inspirational source for the biggest industrial companies in Denmark.
